DRIVER MARKET: Reserve or development F1 role ‘not an option’ says Hulkenberg

 

 

The chances of Nico Hulkenberg remaining on the F1 grid in 2020 are looking increasingly slim – and it seems if a race seat isn’t possible, the German has no interest in hanging around in a supporting role…

Hulkenberg was jettisoned by Renault for next season, with Mercedes junior Esteban Ocon taking his place alongside Daniel Ricciardo. Alfa Romeo was a potential destination but that door slammed shut on Monday when they announced Antonio Giovinazzi would be staying put.

That leaves just one seat at Williams, racing with George Russell, or joining the Red Bull family with either the senior team or Toro Rosso – but Hulkenberg reckons a return to Williams, the team he made his debut with, is unlikely while the chances of Red Bull looking externally are remote.

“I think they [Williams] need somebody else,” said Hulkenberg, who was speaking before Giovinazzi's deal was announced.

 

“I think I’m not the right person, the right driver for them, not at all. It’s just where I am in my career, where they are, and the timings, I just don’t think it’s the right timing for us. With all due respect to the team, and obviously I’ve raced for them and everything, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

If a race seat isn’t possible, taking a reserve, development or simulator role would be one way for Hulkenberg to keep his foot in the door, with Ocon proof that route can pay off. But Hulkenberg said “no, that’s not an option”.

If it’s racing Hulkenberg is interested in, it remains unclear what series he might be able to conjure up an opportunity. The German, though, has hinted he might take a break from motorsport completely.

 

“Maybe [I will] not race for a while,” said Hulkenberg, who added he expected to know his future plans “two months ago”. “Honestly, I don’t know right now. It depends on what happens and what unfolds here. Once we have that answer, I’ll look at other things. I said that earlier, I don’t want to rush into something or jump on something just to race. It needs to be something that I like, a challenge that excites me. I have no conclusion, no perfect answer for that yet.”

Hulkenberg had a successful junior career, winning A1GP, Formula 3 Euroseries and GP2. When asked if he was frustrated not to be able to replicate that form in F1, Hulkenberg replied: “Of course it is, yeah. But then obviously with times, with years gone by, you understand it.

“You don’t want to say it fades away, but if you don’t have the tools, it kind of becomes very difficult, and your options are very limited to fight at the front.

 

“You look at the next best thing, which is always you want to beat your team mate, maximise what you have with the car for good results. You do what you can. Of course you would like to do more, and still dream about it, but the reality is different. But then if you look outside, what is the next best thing? What is the alternative? Formula 1 is still Formula 1.

“It means a lot. It is the pinnacle of motor racing. It’s not an option or alternative to say I’ll go somewhere else now, because this is still the best drivers in the world, the best teams, the best engineers.”

Despite his 2020 racing future looking bleak, Hulkenberg hasn’t given up hope of trying out the new generation of F1 cars. “It’s very uncertain right now,” he said. “I’d love to feel it [the 2021 car]. But I simply don’t know, I can’t tell you right now.”

The 2019 United States Grand Prix wasn't won by Lewis Hamilton on Sunday but his fighting spirit – evident in his relentless pursuit for victory – underlined the mentality a Formula 1 champion needs to possess…

It was a Grand Prix that showed exactly why he has had such success.

The fact that he was only a few laps away from the victory underlined his impressive race performances of 2019, which have been key to his title win.

 

With eight of his 10 wins this year not coming from pole position, Hamilton has often had to rely on his race craft for victories.

But what has been interesting, and prevalent again in Austin, has been his mentality – that of a champion – which has been apparent over the radio this year.

During the race Hamilton was told he was going to be in a fight with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the end of the race, for second place. As it turned out, Mercedes were spot on with their estimations, but Hamilton wasn’t interested in fighting for second.

Starting from fifth and fighting for second to many drivers might seem like a pretty good race day, but Hamilton’s ‘win at all costs’ mentality shows how hungry he is, especially as a win in Austin was irrelevant in the grand scheme of his title.

He asked his team how he can win, and what the gap was to Valtteri Bottas, and also defied the team’s call to pit, opting to stay out for another lap in his bid to take the fight to his team mate.

For those at the front it’s somewhat simpler. Hamilton would have known he was in a fight with Bottas and Verstappen, because they were running as a three at the start, and he would have known both Ferraris were out of contention by the time he could no longer see Leclerc in his mirrors.

But once Bottas and Verstappen both pitted, he no longer has a clue how he’s looking or how the race may unfold.

 

He wouldn’t know the likely strategies of others and certainly wouldn’t have a clue about their pace whilst they are the best part of 20 seconds behind him on track.

So this is why we get the update radio messages from team to driver from time to time.

“OK Lewis, we’re going to the end, 32 laps remaining, this will be close with Verstappen at the end of the race.”

That’s the radio message Hamilton got in Austin, and is typical as an update message for a driver as they emerge from their pit stop. It’s useful information to keep them in the loop, and then they’ll get the odd update and confidence lifter from the pit wall in the remaining laps as well, to keep the driver motivated, knowing he’s doing a good job.

But for Hamilton as soon as he hears he’s in a fight for second, you can hear his frustrations - he’s always questioning how that can be better. In Austin his response was: “so I haven’t got a chance to win?”

Pole man and race winner Valtteri Bottas was the hero of the day in Austin (alongside his history book re-writing team mate) – and he’s also turning into a bit of a hero for F1 Fantasy players, both he and his Mercedes team making their 11th appearance of the year in the ‘Best Team’ after their near-perfect weekend.

Joining, Charles Leclerc may not have been overjoyed with his weekend, but fourth on the grid to fourth at the flag was enough for the Monegasque to make the cut here, along with the two excellent midfield performances of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, Ricciardo earning the Turbo Driver accolade.

Rounding out the team came Williams’ George Russell, the Briton making his second appearance in the squad in as many weeks.

While we have your attention, we couldn’t help but notice that, despite the fact that the US Grand Prix marked his (very unlucky) 13th appearance in the ‘Worst Team’ this season, a full 11.9% of F1 Fantasy players still have Romain Grosjean in their teams.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with being a Grosjeanophile, per se… but given his and Haas’ struggles in the races this year, we’d strongly advise approaching both RoGro and KMag with caution in F1 Fantasy terms. Both drivers make this week’s ‘Worst Team’, Magnussen now second-highest to Grosjean on the list of appearances, with nine…

Along with those two come the race’s only official retirees, Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica, while late stoppages for Magnussen and Pierre Gasly (although they were still classified 18th and 16th respectively) didn’t help their causes.

Toro Rosso, meanwhile, make their first ‘Worst Team’ constructor appearance of 2019 after a point-less race at the Circuit of The Americas, Daniil Kvyat having finished 10th on the road after his late challenge on Sergio Perez, before a post-race penalty for that challenge dropped him to P12.
